Area cooks invited to ‘Go Nuts With Pecans’ in festival cooking contest

15th Annual N C Pecan Harvest Festival

Contest Guidelines
  • The contest is open to youth and adults of North Carolina and is limited to the first 150 entries (25 in each category—four in adult and one in youth)
  • Type or print the recipe on an 8 _ x 11” sheet of paper. In the upper right hand corner, include name, address, telephone number and category entered. Youth division (10 to 15 yr old) contestants should include age and school attending
  • Recipes must be submitted by Friday, October 24, 2008 to N. C. Pecan Festival Recipe Contest, 600 _ South Madison, Whiteville or mailed to P.O.Box 1064, Whiteville, NC 28472.
  • One recipe per category can be submitted and each entry must contain at least one (1) cup of pecans.
  • Entries must be prepared by the contestant.
  • Contestants will prepare and deliver entries (for each category entered) to the Civic Room at the Whiteville City School Administration building, 106 W. Walter Street by 9:30 am, Saturday, Nov 1. Doors will open at 8:30 am and early delivery is encouraged. Doors will be locked at 10 am and no entries will be accepted after that time.
  • Refrigeration facilities or ovens for heating will not be available. Any type of container may be used.
  • Contestants will have a 2’ x 2’ space to display each entry.
  • Recipes do not have to be original and will become the property of the N. C Pecan Harvest Festival and Pecan Growers Association.
  • The public is invited to view the entries between 1:00-2:00 pm. Dishes must be picked up between 2:00-3:00 pm; the committee is not responsible for lost containers

Categories

ADULTS

  • Adults (ages 16 and older) may enter one recipe in each category: Appetizer, Main Dish, Sides/Salads and Dessert

YOUTH

  • Youth (ages 10 to 15) may enter one recipe in only one category: Dessert
  • For the Youth Contestants: all entries must be prepared by the contestant; only the youth entering the contest will be allowed to set up their item in the display area. No parent or other adult will be allowed to assist the youth.

Judging

  • Judging will begin promptly at 10 am. Contestants or the public will not be permitted to view the judging. Winners will be announced from the main festival stage at approximately 2 pm.
  • Entries will be judged on: flavor (40%), appearance (20%), creative use of pecans (20%), texture (10%) and ease of recipe (10%).
  • Cash prizes will be awarded to the first three places in each category.
  • Prize amounts will be first place ($100), second ($75) and third ($50).
  • A Grand Prize “overall winner” (one adult and one youth) will be selected from the first place winners and be awarded an additional $100 cash prize.
  • Awards will also be given for “best presentation” and “most creative use of pecans.”
